I'm back....
In more ways than one too. I am back from vacation and my dsl connection is back from the dead. While on vacation last week, happily ssh'd into my home network using a free wifi signal from the condo one floor above me, I noticed that my dsl connection at home, 500 miles away, had gone down. After several failed attempts at talking my 61 year old mother (over the phone) through the process of bringing my dsl back from the dead, I finally gave up and tried to enjoy the rest of my vacation in spite of the fact that my server was down. I just got back about 2 hours ago, and the first thingI did was get reconnceted. Lightening ran in and fried the dsl surge protector, taking my connection down. The surge protector did it's job, and took the blow for my modem. I hate thunderstorms.

CRAZY BUSY
I am not dead, just busy. Everything is fine. To those of you who have contacted me to ask if I was alright: thank you. I am sorry that I have had to neglect the forum, blog, and podcast for nearly a month; it was unavoidable.

Your normal broadcast schedule will resume shortly. Thanks for your concern :-)

More router fun
Last week (5 days ago to be exact) I replaced my primary router, a wrt54g ver.5.0 (linksys firmware) with an inexpensive belkin f5d7230-4 router. Today I replaced the belkin with a buffalo WHR-G54S. I am happy now. The belkin was an impulse buy with little to know research done before hand. I was tired of the problems and just went and bought a cheap router. It worked perfectly too. But I wanted to be able to do more with less so I bought the buffalo, and am returning the belkin tomorrow. I have already put dd-wrt on the new router. The buffalo is a cheap and good router, and now it's even better with dd-wrt. Now both my routers, primary and wirless bridge client are running dd-wrt. Maybe my downtime woes are a thing of the past.

my linksys router will die no more
My wrt54g ver 5.0 router is not a part of my network anymore:-) It has been giving me fits for the last month. I replaced it today. I still have happily using my wrt54gl running dd-wrt, but the primary router has been replaced. Hopefully this will end the downtime.

Car wreck photos
As you can see the car doesn't look too bad. civic crash civic crash againIt's amazing really how little damage was done to have been hit by an 18-wheeled truck when going 70 mph on the interstate. To say thAT I am forunate to have fared better than the car did would be an understatement. There is actually just over $6000.00 damage. It's been 20 days. I should be getting the car back early next week.

Photos from the Dominican Republic
I took these pics on the beach today. It's around 87 degrees F here today, but feels cooler on the beach. By the pool though, it's VERY hot. If you love the beach as much as I do, Punta Cana, Domincan Republic is hard to beat. This place is really really nice. It's by far, the nicest beach that I have ever been too. DR vacation 1 DR vacation 2 DR vacation 3 I decided on which graphic novel to take to read while down here: Crisis on Infinite Earths. This is probably not technically a graphic novel, as it is just the 12 monthly issues, orginally published in 1985, compiled in book form. I enjoyed reading it very much. The wait staff and employees here only make about 150 US dollars a month. One of the waiters here became quite excited when he say me reading a a 300 plus page comic book. He stopped and offered to buy it from me. That, I am told, is VERY unusual; normally the people here are trying to sell you stuff at inflated prices, and you have to go back and forth with them on the price to keep from getting ripped off. I had never had a local offer to buy something from me. The last thing i thought might end up in the hands of a local here was my new comic book. I don't think I could have slept good if I ended up selling him the book; so today I gave it to him. He was very happy about that. It was fun to watch. I hope it doesn't get fired for reading it on the job.

DR vacation 4 DR vacation 5 DR vacation 6 It's also been sorta fun using my linux laptop down here in the sports bar too. Everytime I come in here I get to give a linux demonstration. No really, I do linux demonstrations. Noting organized or planned of course, but curious window and mac users haven't been the least bit shy about coming up and asking what kind of computer I am running. It's been funny really; I sit down here and try to get something done, when somebody will walk up and say excuse me what is that you are running. I have shown beryl to at least 2 different curious windows users, and one mac user. They were VERY impressed! To quote one one of the windows users after seeing beryl,"you have just blown my mind". I even had one conversation with a windows user that lasted almost 2 hours; he had LOTS of questions. I was more than happy to talk about linux though. Most of the tourist here are from Europe. I guess I was thinking more Europeans knew about linux, but to the ones here at least, linux was very new to them.

It's been a great vacation, and it's not half over yet

SSH saves the day
While here in the Dominican Republic, using the free wifi, I tried to connect to irc.freenode.net. I kept getting kicked off though--something about the network running an open proxy. No biggie for linux and ssh. I simply ssh'd into my home machine and ran irssi from there. All good now. I could have done the same thing with a ssh port tunnel, but running screen over my ssh session was nice, as I was able to do many things at once.

I hope to post some vacation photos tomorrow.

Greetings from the Dominican Republic
I just found out that the resort I am staying at has free wifi; it's a good thing I brought my laptop. Without the laptop, the resort would have charged me $4/20 minutes for internet access! Speaking of getting ripped off... I left my cell phone on the plane. When I got to the resort, I had the front desk call the airport. Long story short, $66 dollars in taxi fares later, I had my cell phone back. Someone had made 8 calls on it too! Anyway, that's behind me now; It's 86 degrees F and beautiful. I will be the tannest geek on earth by weeks end. I will try to post some pictures. I better get get off the computer now though, before the wife starts complaining.
