Sun seeks redemption in software licensing
From NewsForge: In my review of Sun Java Desktop System release 2, I criticized Sun Microsystems for imposing such restrictive licensing terms on its customers. A discussion on Groklaw followed, and Sun contacted me to discuss the license and how it might modify it in the future. I had several suggestions, and overall they were happy to have the feedback and eager to make their future license agreements more user friendly. But proprietary thinking dies hard. Will Sun really reduce the restrictions in its licenses?...Read More

Sun floats open source Solaris, but is it any of SCO's concern?
Sun Microsystems' self-anointed Open Source Diva, the talkative and intelligent Danese Cooper, admitted in her Divablog the other day that her company has been "leaking" its plans to open source its Unix System V-based Solaris operating system for years. But not too many people have been paying too much attention. Until now....Read Commentary at NewsForge.com

"Free Hardware": a Trojan Horse?
Recently, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft have been pushing a vision of the future in which computing hardware is "free" actually, sold with software subscriptions. IT customers tempted to sign on should take a lesson from the recent box-office bomb Troy and beware of suits bearing gifts. Because it's very clear that this version of "free" hardware will actually be controlled hardware controlled, specifically, to effectively seize control of the customer's operation....Read More at Eric S. Sun's Java Desktop System 2 is No Improvement
Basically, very few things have changed in the client version of JDS. The desktop and installation looks very much the same as it did a few months ago. The installation has a few bugs: a) some strings haven't been converted to "Sun JDS" from "SuSE Linux", b) Evolution and gnome-user-docs packages are stalling during installation because of the misbehaving 'scrollkeeper-in' process that takes 99% of the CPU and needs killing to continue (same bug as on JDS1) and c) when trying to edit a user's groups the font representing the groups is unreadable....Read More at OSNews.com
