Rolling your own Debian packages
This two-part article explains how to make a Debian package of simple piece of software, presumably something you have written yourself. Although building a new package is more complex than rebuilding one or having one generated, the idea is that it is actually surprisingly simple to create basic Debian packages. In fact, if you can make software install into a temporary installation tree, you're already 90% done! This text provides a quick alternative to the more comprehensive Debian New Maintainers' Guide. Only knowledge of Makefiles and the basic Debian package tools is assumed....Read the Rest

Data Mining using Google
Google (and many other search engines) has the ability not only to search on keywords, but also using a more “database-ish” query language to really narrow down your search results. Below is a summary of a few of the most useful lesser known features... Read the Rest

Run linux on your old X-box (Step by Step guide)
The Xbox is a legacy-free PC by Microsoft that consists of an Intel Celeron 733 MHz CPU, an nVidia GeForce 3MX, 64 MB of RAM, a 8/10 GB hard disk, a DVD drive and 10/100 Ethernet. As on every PC, you can run Linux on it.

An Xbox with Linux can be a full desktop computer with mouse and keyboard, a web/email box connected to TV, a server or router or a node in a cluster. You can either dual-boot or use Linux only; in the latter case, you can replace both IDE devices. And yes, you can connect the Xbox to a VGA monitor. site: xbox-linux.org

Looking for some feedback
I am hosting this webpage, blog, and podcast from a 10 year old Sparc Ultra2 and my 1500/128k ADSL connection :-(

For anyone who has downloaded one of my podcast, or used this blog, or visited my main page: how slow is this site? And more specifically, how long or painful is the podcasy download time?

My ISP is SUPPOSED to double my download speed soon (and hopefully my upload speed as well). My preception is that this site is going through some growing pains, mainly due to the extra bandwidth required by my podcast. I fear that some hardware and bandwidth upgrades may be required in the future (hopefully not the near future)

Thanks in advance.

Companies that violate GPL may also be violating federal law.
"Linux products are generally covered under GPL which among other things mandates that the source code must be available. Violating the terms of GPL is usually not a big deal and the offending companies are generally made to merely release the code, but Wasabi says that Sarbanes-Oxley makes this much more complicated." GPL 3 disses DRM
From arstechnica.com: The draft for the long-awaited third revision of the GNU Public Licence, a popular open-source license used for the Linux kernel and many other OSS projects, was posted earlier this week and has already generated heated discussion. One particular pair of paragraphs stand out, as they directly address the hot-button issue of Digital Rights Management, or DRM:...Read the Rest

Coming soon: The Linux Macintel
From linux-watch.com:

"I'm sure we will see Windows running on a Mactel... someday. It may be when Vista finally shows up, since it should run with EFI, or perhaps when they get Virtual PC 8 out, but long, long before then, we'll be able to run Linux and Mac OS X on the same Mactel box.

Now, as always, Linux remains the most flexible of all operating systems. ...Read the Rest

Linux: Genuinely Trustworthy Computing
From an article at enterprisenetworkingplanet.com: "FOSS enforces trust on a couple of levels. One, the community values of openness and sharing, and two, there is no place to hide. Everything is transparent. It is possible that one of the Linux distributions could make a deal with the devil, and sneak in unsavory bits. But they would be found out, and it is trivially easy to migrate to a different distribution."...Read the Rest

The Socratic Method:
Teaching by Asking Instead of by Telling by Rick Garlikov

"The experiment was to see whether I could teach these students binary arithmetic (arithmetic using only two numbers, 0 and 1) only by asking them questions. None of them had been introduced to binary arithmetic before. Though the ostensible subject matter was binary arithmetic, my primary interest was to give a demonstration to the teacher of the power and benefit of the Socratic method where it is applicable. That is my interest here as well. I chose binary arithmetic as the vehicle for that because...."Read the Rest

The Linux pod people pocket $1500
I wish something like this would happen to me

Not often thought of as radio stars, Linux developers are now able to steal the limelight thanks to Dapto couple James and Karin Purser who produce the Linux Australia Update and the LUG Roundup podcasts from their lounge room.

Linux Australia has this week donated $1500 to the Purser's to help them upgrade their equipment.....Read the rest

I HOPE I don't have to resort to some other kind of delivery service. I really like hosting/serving my own stuff. Saves lotsa $$$$
