SysAdmin to SysAdmin: Perl's Tie::File module
wo factors outshine all others as reasons I became a systems administrator. The first is that, well, I like computers and computing. The second is that I'm not particularly fond of writing code. If I were, I'd probably be a programmer. As it stands, if I can find tools that work, I won't write code. However, inevitably, some site-specific situation will come up for which I have no choice. In that case, I at least want to write very little code. Perl's Tie::File has helped me do that on more than one occasion....Read More at linux.com

"Free Hardware": a Trojan Horse?
Recently, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft have been pushing a vision of the future in which computing hardware is "free" actually, sold with software subscriptions. IT customers tempted to sign on should take a lesson from the recent box-office bomb Troy and beware of suits bearing gifts. Because it's very clear that this version of "free" hardware will actually be controlled hardware controlled, specifically, to effectively seize control of the customer's operation....Read More at Eric S. LA to Oregon at Mach 9
Here is a pretty cool website: This spring I went to Oregon to help out my family's softball tournament. It's normally a 10 hour drive so I decided to find a faster way. I strapped a rocket to my car and was able to make the trip in an astounding 6 minutes! Top speed was 6900 miles per hour, or over mach 9. To prove this to the world, I put a video camera on the front bumper which is about a foot off the ground....Read More

Sun's Java Desktop System 2 is No Improvement
Basically, very few things have changed in the client version of JDS. The desktop and installation looks very much the same as it did a few months ago. The installation has a few bugs: a) some strings haven't been converted to "Sun JDS" from "SuSE Linux", b) Evolution and gnome-user-docs packages are stalling during installation because of the misbehaving 'scrollkeeper-in' process that takes 99% of the CPU and needs killing to continue (same bug as on JDS1) and c) when trying to edit a user's groups the font representing the groups is unreadable....Read More at OSNews.com

Novell Shows Off Linux Capacity
For years, Linux was feared to be synonymous with immature products, inadequate support, limited applications and a fragmented market, said Mohamed Cassojee, Oracle SA strategy advisor, on day two of Brainshare Africa 2004 at the Sandton Convention Centre. To combat these views, the keynote showcased Novell's Linux abilities, which include "unbreakable Linux" support from Oracle....Read More at allafrica.com
