Dynamic DNS (DyNS) Update Behind Router
Here's alittle howto of sorts from FedoraNews.org: "Like most broadband services, my home broadband ISP network IP is dynamic, meaning, my IP doesn't always stay the same. If I want to have a means to access my home computer easily, say from work, I will need to subscribe to one of the many free Dynamic DNS services available on the internet. One of my personal favourite is DyNS (www.dyns.cx). They offer simple no-fuss sign-ups and very intuitive, clean and easy to use web-interface. And they have made most of their services free. Really neat!"...Read More

Latest MySQL Fails to Quiet Licensing Critics
From InternetNews: Open Source database vendor MySQL AB released its latest incremental release last week (version 4.0.20), but according to some in the community, it still doesn't address what some say serious licensing concerns. The licensing issue prevents it from being included in some Linux distributions and working together, from a licensing perspective, with PHP....Read More

Secure programmer: Minimizing privileges
Taking the fangs out of bugs from IBM DveloperWorks: " Secure programs must minimize privileges so that any bugs are less likely to be become security vulnerabilities. This article discusses how to minimize privileges by minimizing the privileged modules, the privileges granted, and the time the privileges are active. The article discusses not only some of the traditional UNIX-like mechanisms for privileges, but some of the newer mechanisms like the FreeBSD jail(), the Linux Security Modules (LSM) framework, and Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux)."...Read More

CLI for noobies: network tools, can you dig it?
More commnad line for newbie goodness: " This week we're going to take a look at three command line tools which can sometimes help resolve Internet connectivity issues. But first, you lazy louts, you have to get up out of that comfortable but mind-numbing GUI hammock you've been napping in and exercise your typing fingers. If you need additional motivation to break your GUI addiction, consider the fact that Microsoft recently patented the act of double-clicking your rodent. Enough said."....Read More

Grokline's UNIX Ownership History Project
This is an open, community-based, collaborative research project, a living history, designed to carefully trace the ownership history of UNIX and UNIX-like code with the goal of reducing, or eliminating, the amount of software subject to superficially plausible but ultimately invalid copyright, patent and trade secret claims against Linux or other free and open source software. If there is any code out there that represents a conceivable risk of that kind, we'd like to identify it and mitigate the litigation risk now. If there isn't any valid claim that can be made, we'd like to be able to prove it. Read More

Spent the day adding prgrams to FC2
I spent my day dwelling on which repository to use for FC2. Did I say I love choices? I settled on linvia and fedora.us. I will still get stuff I can't get through them at freshrpms (of course being extreamly careful not to cause package overlap). I got just about everything I wanted installed. That is one thing I like about debian better than FC; the sheer size of the repository. Almost anything you could possibly want to enhance a debian system is in one place. This was a problem with FC1 as well. Things will get better; but will I have abandoned FC by then? I need sleep (not really).
