I saw "Apaptation" night before last
"Adaptation" may not be one of the top 10 movies I have ever seen. It is a good movie though; and may be Nicolas Cage's best movie yet. It also stars Meryl Streep and Best Supporting Actor Winner Chris Cooper. The movie was written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze. Cage plays screenwriter Chralie Kaufman and his twin bother Donald Kaufman. Soon after completing his work on "Being John Malkovich" Charlie (Cage) is hired to write the screenplay for a movie based on a best selling book written by Streep about an obsessive orchid hunter (Cooper). As Charlie is having trouble writing the screenplay, he ends up writing himself and his twin brother into the movie. Talk about life imatating art. Kaufman writes a movie about himself writing himself into a movie. Not as confusing as "Memento", but as orginal. This is a fun movie. Also reminds me of "American Splendour" in some ways. If you like original comedy, and drama mixed then you will probably enjoy this movie.

On being unemployed
I have been unemployed now for 8 monthes. There are things that are nice about being unemployed; being home with my daughters, working on my computer, going to bed late, and....well that might be about all that's nice about it actually. For the most part it is not fun at all. I have been through a variety of emotions (most of them succesfully supressed, as I so often do) since being layed off. The most recent emotion (anger) I started experienceing about 48 hours ago; and I was entirely unsuccessful in supressing it. I am still mad now, if I think about it. I am tired of being unemployed. I am tired of hearing about my unemployment too. I am tired of thinking about it. I am suprised actually that it has taken me this long to become angry. Knowing my personality though, this was inevitable. I usually hold things in till I explode; then I get over it. I think this has just happened to me. It's probably a good thing. Now I can get over it, and get on with my unemployment and hopefully end this chapter of my life in relative short order.

When time permits I will be changing them, and working on a way to randomize them somewhat (or less imaginatively put them in some kind of gallery).

Here is another screenshot of my fedora core 2 desktop. This one is more customized than the first nearly stock desktop screenshot that I posted nearly 10 days ago. I am still patiently waiting on the non-open source drivers from NVidia for my GeForce 4 Ti4600, so I can run a dual head configuration again. Spent the day adding prgrams to FC2
I spent my day dwelling on which repository to use for FC2. Did I say I love choices? I settled on linvia and fedora.us. I will still get stuff I can't get through them at freshrpms (of course being extreamly careful not to cause package overlap). I got just about everything I wanted installed. That is one thing I like about debian better than FC; the sheer size of the repository. Almost anything you could possibly want to enhance a debian system is in one place. This was a problem with FC1 as well. Things will get better; but will I have abandoned FC by then? I need sleep (not really).

Another drawback to having 6642 fonts in ~/.fonts is that it will also cause OpenOffice to crash. Took me just a few mimutes to figure that one out. Needless to say, I don't have any extra fonts installed now.

Not really a bug report
Just a personal observation made during my first day and a half with Fedora Core 2: IF you put 6642 (don't ask) different true type font files in your ~./.fonts folder it is going to take a long time for Nautilus to load them even on a an only moderately old Athlon 1.4 with 1 GB of ram. That has been the only slow thing I have noticed about Fedora Core 2 though. This OS is wicked fast! Gnome 2.6 is beautiful too.

For the brave of heart (or just lazy)
Upgrading from FC1 to FC2 using yum - a few suggestions:
There are certain things only anaconda can do. There is no other way
around it. If you're using LVM stop reading and know that you must use
anaconda to do this upgrade.
In general, if you're not cramped for space/time/something you should use
anaconda to upgrade. You'll find you come out with a much more reliable upgrade
process and much less pain. However, if you'd like to try to upgrade the whole
system via yum you should follow these instructions...Read More

I hate waiting
I am impatient. I got my nice shiny new install of fedora core 2 up and running; and now I have to wait. Waiting for the repositories to be populated with the latest binaries for FC2.s hard to do. Sometimes I wish fedora came pre-loaded with all the questionable stuff they choose to leave out; but it is easily obtainabale *for those who can wait 12 to 72 hours. I know I could compile from souce, but I only want to do that for stuff I can't find with apt or yum for FC2. It makes it easier to manage packages way. I hate waiting, especially for the NVidia drivers. I got a lot to do though. So I guess I should make use of the time in waiting.

It's too early to tell yet, but
I installed Fedora Core 2 this morning. Only one thing is bothering me, and it actually has nothing to do with the FC2 release. Here is what is bothering me: I have to wait on NVidia's proprietary drivers in order to get dual head monitors working. It's my understanding that the open sourced "nv" driver is not capable of dual head operation (using xinerama), but the closed source "nvidia" can do dual heads (using twinview). I have set this up in the past ("nvidia" driver using twinview"), but this is my first attempt at using the open sourced "nv" drivers woith xinerama. I can either re-compile my kernel, working around the 4k/8k stack issue or I can just wait a couple of weeks for nvidia to release a new driver and live with just one monitor. What was I saying about loving choice?

Blogging is foreign to me
I am not good at blogging. I don't have anything to say; or at least I don't think I do? I sorta feel foolish doing this too; I mean, who is actually interested in what I have to say? I guess that's why I fill my blog with stuff other people have said and written--stuff I am interested in. I am gonna "try" to give blogging and honest shot though and start providing more of my own commentary, opinions, and views on here more often though. Don't know if it will be worth reading or not, but it should be a little fun, and maybe a little embarrassing too.
I will definetly post my review of fedora core 2.

A Fedora Core 2 night
1:24 am: bittorrent download complete; checking md5sums as I type this. I will burn the isos next. I will probably install tonight too. Who needs sleep? Sorta dread it a little though. I have been using linux since '95 or '96, upgrading dutifully every 6 monthes or so. It's become almost routine, but its still alot of work (and fun) getting everything customized to my taste. Who am I kidding? I love this stuff. This may be the last chance I give fedora/redhat though. Not that I have been dissapointed in the past--quite the oppisite. But, I have recently changed my other 3 linux machines over to debian this year. Debian is wonderful. but so is fedora. The same but different. I love choice!!!

What's up with that?!?
Blosxom is a very cool program. It is amazing really what a little perl program is capable of. I have been having some problems though since implementing two of the blosxom plugins last night. I don't know if it's my isp's connection, my server config, my server hardware, or the plugins. I have been trying all day to track the problem down. Still haven't been able too either. So, if the site is unreachable every so often, then you'll know that more than likely I am sitting in front of my workstation, SSHing into my server, becoming even more frustrated.
