Latest emelfm2 (0.4.0) for ubuntu gutsy
For those of you who don't want to go through the simple 2 step build from source procedure for emelfm2: Here it is emelfm2_0.4.0-1_i386.deb for ubuntu gutsy. Link to download page is on the left hand side of this page. Offical site : emelfm2.net. This is just a deb that I built from source. YMMV, although it works fine on my system.

How to get video from your linux system onto your Cowon U3
I got most of this information from the iAudio iaudiophile.net forum; I had to add the bit about -afm ffmpeg though.

mencoder name_of_file.avi -quiet -oac pcm -ovc xvid -ofps 15 -vf scale=160:-2 -xvidencopts pass=1:vhq=4:me_quality=4:max_bframes=0 -afm ffmpeg -o /dev/null && mencoder name_of_file.avi -quiet -oac pcm -ovc xvid -ofps 15 -vf scale=160:-2 -xvidencopts pass=2:bitrate=256:vhq=4:me_quality=4:max_bframes=0 -afm ffmpeg -o iAudio_name_of_file.avi

This is a double pass encode routine. The -afm ffmpeg is necessary to get the sound working correctly--or at least is was for me using the mencoder that comes standard with ubuntu 7.10

It is possible to do this with a single pass like this:

mencoder name_of_file.avi -quiet -oac pcm -ovc xvid -ofps 15 -vf scale=160:-2 -xvidencopts pass=1:vhq=4:me_quality=4:max_bframes=0 -afm ffmpeg -o iAudio_name_of_file.avi

Either one will work, although I have read that a double pass is better--don't know why. YMMV

Latest emelfm2 (0.3.6) for ubuntu gutsy
For those of you who don't want to go through the simple 2 step build from source procedure for emelfm2: Here it is emelfm2_0.3.6-1_i386.deb for ubuntu gutsy. Link to download page is on the left hand side of this page. Offical site : emelfm2.net. This is just a deb that I built from source. YMMV works fine on my system. This is an excellent release that took care of some annoying problems the previous version was having with gtk2.12.0.

Ubnutu 7.10 Official Documentation Released (finally)
The official documentation developed and maintained by the Ubuntu Documentation Project has finally been released. I wonder what took so long, and why the decision was made to release a new version without having finished documentation. I really think that documentation is an area where Ubuntu has a lot of room for improvement, not just in the timeliness of release, but in the quantity/quality department as well. Compared to other distros, Ubuntu's documentation is anemic.

Good stuff here for parents with linux
From linux.com: A parent's guide to Linux Web filtering. The article is from 2004 but is still useful. Fot those looking for an easier solution: Ubuntu Christian edition makes a Dans Guardian install so easy a caveman could do it.

Petition to Open Source Mainactor
Thanks to Pat from TLLTS for the heads up regarding this:

There is an effort to have MainConcept release the source code for the MainActor video editing application which recently ceased development. Dan Dennedy (from the Kino project) has volunteered to lead the project if it's open sourced.

Please take a few minutes and sign the petition:

News like this can't be bad
A recent survey of some 400 developers found a 12% decrease in development for the windows platform, and a 34% increase in development for linux. Read the article: Windows losing ground with US developers. You can say almost anything with statistics, but assumming the population polled was represenative, this seems like wonderful news to me.
