Ubuntu 9.04 beta
From the ubuntu known issues page:

Users of Intel video chipsets have reported performance regressions in Ubuntu 8.10 compared with previous releases. (252094) Although these performance issues have not been resolved by default in Ubuntu 9.04, a new experimental acceleration architecture option, DRI2/UXA, is available for Intel graphics users. Our testing has found this provides significant performance improvements for many users, but has also shown risk of severe stability problems, thus we are not yet providing to the general public. You can opt-in to enable this by running "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf", and adding Option "AccelMethod" "UXA" to the Device section of your xorg.conf. Users wishing to maximize stability should stay with the standard default acceleration method, "EXA".

All I have to say is, FINALLY! After over a year of waiting to FINALLY reap the benefits of the this "open" intel, gma965 chipset, x3100 graphics card, I can FINALLY run compiz, watch/resize/move video, AND scroll web pages, all at the same time, and all at a speed that can not be described as slow. From what I can find on the internet, performance and stability are greater on the 965 vs the 945 chipset, but YMMV. See the UXA testing page for a short howto, and for some idea of the results other are seeing. Things are FINALLY looking up.

As an aside (is it really an "aside", if it's almost completely unrelated?), I also finally figured out what was causing Audacity 1.3.7 to produce crappy results in Jaunty. Turns out that you currently have to resample all your audio to the same rate before importing it into a project in order for it to not chop you lower rate sound to pieces upon playback/export.

It's looking so far, like Jaunty is gonna turn out nice.

Now, if they could just get KDE to play nice with the rest of the distro....
