Software Freedom Day and the Atlanta Linux Fest
Drove down to Atlanta this morning with a couple of guys from my LUG, Jas Eckard and David Nalley, to pimp the SouthEast LinuxFest. Technically, David Nalley, a Fedora Ambassador, went to speak at the event, but he helped Jas and I drum up support for SELF too. The event we went to was the Atlanta Linux Fest, a Software Freedom Day event put on by the Ubuntu Georga Loco group. The event was distro agnostic, and all about free software. I was even allowed to speak about the SouthEast LinuxFest (SELF). We handed out about 100 SELF flyers too. This was a great event that was planned in abouut 6 weeks, and had around 140 people show up. There were talks on Fedora 10, dual booting linux, lotus symphony, ssh and gpg, virtulization, and 3d gaming. Good times were had by all in attendance. A day full of free software talks, an installfest, and pizza too--what's not to like? I recorded some content for the podcast too. Many thanks go to Josh Chase, from the linuxcrypt podcast, and Nick Ali from the Ubuntu Podcast, and the Ubuntu Georgia Loco group for putting on such a wonderful Software Freedom Day/Linux Install Fest event.

lottalinuxlinks.com mirrored
Thanks to the generosity of my friend Ken Fallon, my entire website (with the exception of the forum) is now mirrored on a debian box he gave me in the Netherlands. I may get around to mirroring the forums eventually, (once I figure out database replication, or some kind of high availbilty clustering solution--and happen to have the time too) but for now I am happy having everything else mirrored. So, in case my dsl ever goes down again, this site can still be reached at nl.lottalinuxlinks.com.

Latest emelfm2 (0.4.0) for ubuntu gutsy
For those of you who don't want to go through the simple 2 step build from source procedure for emelfm2: Here it is emelfm2_0.4.0-1_i386.deb for ubuntu gutsy. Link to download page is on the left hand side of this page. Offical site : emelfm2.net. This is just a deb that I built from source. YMMV, although it works fine on my system.

Podcast 66 from lottalinuxlinks.com.
Topics include:

In today's podcast dave talks with Bruce Barr from the open shorts podcast.

Listener beware, the first seven minutes or so of the conversation with Bruce are just a bit hard to hear. Dave had his cell phone's volume turned down too low. Fixing the problem resulted in increased road noise during the seven minute portion of the conversation. Please try to suffer through it if you can; it's only a portion of the recording that is affected.

LLL63 addendum part III
Kernel compiling the old fashioned way (or like granny used to do it)

To be safe/cover the bases, make sure that these packages have been installed: kernel-package,build-essential,libncurses5-dev,libqt3-mt-dev,libqt3-headers, and module-assistant.

After downloading and extracting the kernel source tree into your /usr/src/ directory, create a symlink from the newly created directory to /usr/src/linux, then cd to /usr/src/linux/ and issue the following command as root:

make oldconfig

Select the default answers, or Y, N, or M as needs suit.

Next issue the following commands as root:

make dep (I don't think this command is necessary with kernel 2.6.x)

make clean

make bzImage

make modules

make modules_install

make install

You will also need to run this command:

mkinitramfs -o /boot/init-2.6.24.img 2.6.24

where 2.6.24 is the version of the kernel you just compiled.

Edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include the new stanza necessary to boot your new kernel.

Note: If you recompile/rebuild a kernel from a kernel source tree directory where you have previously run any of the above commands, you will need to first run a make mrproper to tidy up the source tree before proceeding. ymmv

LLL63 addendum part II
How to compile a kernel downloaded from kernel.org on a debian based distro (or the commands I mentioned in LLL63, or the world's shortest kernel howto):

To be safe/cover the bases, make sure that these packages have been installed: kernel-package,build-essential,libncurses5-dev,libqt3-mt-dev,libqt3-headers, and module-assistant.

After downloading and extracting the kernel source tree into your /usr/src/ directory, create a symlink from the newly created directory to /usr/src/linux, then cd to /usr/src/linux/ and issue the following command as root:

make oldconfig

Select the default answers, or Y, N, or M as needs suit.

Next issue this command as root:

make-kpkg --initrd buildpackage kernel_image

Go watch TV and come back in an hour, and then issue this command (again as root):

dpkg -i ../*.deb

Reboot :-D

LLL61 is coming soon.
i had planned on posting episode 61 of the podcast tonight, but i am going to be delayed a little--i have a lot of audio and I am trying to decide what to do with it. Also, I have a new mic, and am finding out, I think, that although I sound better while monitoring myself during the recording, that the levelator wants to remove more noise, and I end up with a recodring that has a lot of that digital tunnel like sound you often here when noise removal is overdone. I am trying some different things out in post production, trying to get the best sounding final recording. I am also trying to decide what to do with the audio of the keynotes from the kde 4.0 release event, and a couple of different more random type of recordings I did on the way to the airport in the snow storm. Worst case, you'll get a 50 mnute synopsis of the event type of podcast, or a multi-part hodge-podge mess.

How to get video from your linux system onto your Cowon U3
I got most of this information from the iAudio iaudiophile.net forum; I had to add the bit about -afm ffmpeg though.

mencoder name_of_file.avi -quiet -oac pcm -ovc xvid -ofps 15 -vf scale=160:-2 -xvidencopts pass=1:vhq=4:me_quality=4:max_bframes=0 -afm ffmpeg -o /dev/null && mencoder name_of_file.avi -quiet -oac pcm -ovc xvid -ofps 15 -vf scale=160:-2 -xvidencopts pass=2:bitrate=256:vhq=4:me_quality=4:max_bframes=0 -afm ffmpeg -o iAudio_name_of_file.avi

This is a double pass encode routine. The -afm ffmpeg is necessary to get the sound working correctly--or at least is was for me using the mencoder that comes standard with ubuntu 7.10

It is possible to do this with a single pass like this:

mencoder name_of_file.avi -quiet -oac pcm -ovc xvid -ofps 15 -vf scale=160:-2 -xvidencopts pass=1:vhq=4:me_quality=4:max_bframes=0 -afm ffmpeg -o iAudio_name_of_file.avi

Either one will work, although I have read that a double pass is better--don't know why. YMMV
