ATI 8.34.8 released
Continued success. This is the 3rd driver release in a row from amd/ati that works with the Radeon Mobilty Xpress 200M card in my laptop. It makes me happy.

fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8)

It works with Beryl (albeit using XGL) and I am experiencing noticable frame rate increases too (yes I know glxgears isn't a benchmarking tool).

glxgears
11199 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2239.679 FPS
17053 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3410.522 FPS
17057 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3411.321 FPS
15395 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3078.930 FPS
11926 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2385.025 FPS

I installed it using this file, made executable and run as root.

#!/bin/bash
apt-get update
apt-get install module-assistant build-essential wget
apt-get install fakeroot dh-make debconf libstdc++5 linux-headers-$(uname -r)
wget -c https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ \
ati-driver-installer-8.34.8-x86.x86_64.run
chmod +x ati-driver-installer-8.34.8-x86.x86_64.run
./ati-driver-installer-8.34.8-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/edgy
dpkg -i xorg-driver-fglrx_8.34.8-1_i386.deb fglrx-kernel-source_8.34.8-1_i386.deb fglrx-control_8.34.8-1_i386.deb
rm /usr/src/fglrx-kernel*.deb
module-assistant prepare
module-assistant update
module-assistant build fglrx
module-assistant install fglrx
depmod -a
aticonfig --initial
aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv

The forum is up and running
I have mixed feelings about this. In spite of not knowing if I have an audience that will support yet another forum, in spite of not knowing if I have the time to run a forum, and in spite of not knowing anything about forums, I went ahead and did it anyway. The lottalinuxlinks.com forum has been activated. No one requested this; this is really just something I thought would be fun to get up and running. If this forum falls flat on it's face, is wildly successful, or just basques in the same glow of mediocrity that my podcast enjoys, I can know I was right about one thing: it was a great deal of fun setting it up. Now that the up and running part is done, time will tell if it was a good idea.

Regardless of what I think this forum's real chances of success are, I would really like to see this forum thrive. If this thing takes off in any shape, form, or fashion, I may need to look at getting some moderators. That's probably premature speculation at this point though.

Being the spam hater I am, I have set the user activation setting to require admin approval. This means that to become a registered user, you will have to register, wait for an email from me, reply to my email, and then wait for me to activate your account. This may reduce the forum's chances for growth, but again, time will tell.

So, for what it's worth...have at it.

Today on the way home from work I recorded podcast #29 -- or at least I thought I was recording it. Turns out, I had the batteries in backwards :-(. Anyway, after I recovered from my misfortune, I re-recorded the podcast from my house. I think I have cometo rely on the ambient road noises in the podcast as a crutch of sorts though. Without the road noise, the recording is really TOO good, meaning he normal mouth sounds,swallows, and smacks, are more audible. This is unfortunate for the listener, but if you can suffer through my normal car/podcasts, then a little more mouth sounds want kill you, and remember, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Besides, if it gets too disgusting for you, you can always turn it off:-). I debated re-recording from the car, but that would have had to wait till Monday. I won't (fingers crossed) make this mistake again. So, suffer through this one if you can, and I will resume the normal carcast starting with podcast 30.
