GRRRRR - The only thing I don't like about blosxom
Blosxom is great! I love being able to update my blog with vim over ssh. In fact, I can think on only one thing i don't like about blosxom. It's not as much of a problem with blosxom, as it is with my memory. If I forget, for instance, to include links, in the shownotes of my podcast, for the direct downloads of the media files themselves, in say like the last three podcasts shownotes' blog postings, then I have to go back and re-edit those postings to include the links. Simple enough, right? But if you are in a hurry, or the least bit forgetful (is that a word?), then the files will get new modified times, and blosxom will re-order those post based on the modified time stamp.; this can also cause you to have to re-edit forum post referenceing links to said blog postings.

I am sure that this can be fixed with a simple command (touch -m, maybe), and there may even be a blosxom plug-in out there that would take care of this for me. Don't forget though, that in addition to being in a hurry, and forgetful, that although I am lazy, I am not so lazy that I can't gripe about the stuff that I am too lazy to do right the first time. Evidently I also have a tendency to blame the blog software when it's clearly my fault. I wonder if i can blame blosxom for my poor spelling and sentence structure too?

Latest emelfm2 (0.3.6) for ubuntu gutsy
For those of you who don't want to go through the simple 2 step build from source procedure for emelfm2: Here it is emelfm2_0.3.6-1_i386.deb for ubuntu gutsy. Link to download page is on the left hand side of this page. Offical site : emelfm2.net. This is just a deb that I built from source. YMMV works fine on my system. This is an excellent release that took care of some annoying problems the previous version was having with gtk2.12.0.

Ubnutu 7.10 Official Documentation Released (finally)
The official documentation developed and maintained by the Ubuntu Documentation Project has finally been released. I wonder what took so long, and why the decision was made to release a new version without having finished documentation. I really think that documentation is an area where Ubuntu has a lot of room for improvement, not just in the timeliness of release, but in the quantity/quality department as well. Compared to other distros, Ubuntu's documentation is anemic.

New voice mail/audio comment solution
I got a Grand Central account yesterday. Grand Central, recently aquired by google, is really pretty neat. Grand Central gives you the ability to have all your phones ring from one number, have one universal voice mail box, and do all sorts of cool things. The feature I was/am most interested in is the "call me" button on the right hand side of this page. Click this button and enter your name and phone number (this info will remain private, but is necessary) and Grand Central will call your phone, free of charge, and connect you to my voice mail box. This is a really cool way for you to leave me an audio comment for the podcast. This solution works for me, and doesn't cost you anything. So, if your brave enough to fill out a web form with your name and telephone number (google probably already has this information anyway) you can leave me an audio comment for the podcast. You aren't too chicken are you? Anyway...I thought it was neat.

News like this can't be bad
A recent survey of some 400 developers found a 12% decrease in development for the windows platform, and a 34% increase in development for linux. Read the article: Windows losing ground with US developers. You can say almost anything with statistics, but assumming the population polled was represenative, this seems like wonderful news to me.

This answers some questions that I had
In my most recent podcast, I expressed some concerns about a quote in a reuters news story from Red Hat CEO Matthew Szulik. This article, Red Hat, Microsoft talk Tux, by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, possibly clears up some of the confusion the Rueters story may have caused.

He will probably bore you some with details of his vacation, frank miller's the dark knight returns, free wifi, his new haircut, his insignificant opinion on the gplv3, and his impromptu visit to the panama city linux user group. Be warned, he will complain about the frustration of being 500 miles from home when his dsl connection goes out too.

I'm back....
In more ways than one too. I am back from vacation and my dsl connection is back from the dead. While on vacation last week, happily ssh'd into my home network using a free wifi signal from the condo one floor above me, I noticed that my dsl connection at home, 500 miles away, had gone down. After several failed attempts at talking my 61 year old mother (over the phone) through the process of bringing my dsl back from the dead, I finally gave up and tried to enjoy the rest of my vacation in spite of the fact that my server was down. I just got back about 2 hours ago, and the first thingI did was get reconnceted. Lightening ran in and fried the dsl surge protector, taking my connection down. The surge protector did it's job, and took the blow for my modem. I hate thunderstorms.

The podcast fates are working against me. In addition to thinking I had un-paused the recorder, and audacity giving me fits, I am pretty sure that I failed to talk about dnsmasq on the dd-wrt. The shownotes make mention of the topic, but I think I just forgot. Maybe next time.

More router fun
Last week (5 days ago to be exact) I replaced my primary router, a wrt54g ver.5.0 (linksys firmware) with an inexpensive belkin f5d7230-4 router. Today I replaced the belkin with a buffalo WHR-G54S. I am happy now. The belkin was an impulse buy with little to know research done before hand. I was tired of the problems and just went and bought a cheap router. It worked perfectly too. But I wanted to be able to do more with less so I bought the buffalo, and am returning the belkin tomorrow. I have already put dd-wrt on the new router. The buffalo is a cheap and good router, and now it's even better with dd-wrt. Now both my routers, primary and wirless bridge client are running dd-wrt. Maybe my downtime woes are a thing of the past.

Car wreck photos
As you can see the car doesn't look too bad. civic crash civic crash againIt's amazing really how little damage was done to have been hit by an 18-wheeled truck when going 70 mph on the interstate. To say thAT I am forunate to have fared better than the car did would be an understatement. There is actually just over $6000.00 damage. It's been 20 days. I should be getting the car back early next week.

WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!
Debian etch is hotness. I finally got all the gotchas worked out and I am running Debian etch, kernel-2.6.18-4 and apache2.2 on my sparc ultra2 server:-) YEA ME! Only thing that I haven't got figured out is how to make the switch to udev from hotplug on the sparc. I got around the whole udev/hotplug/2.6.18-4 thing by installing Yaird,(Yet Another Mkinitrd). I had to specifically load some modules in /etc/yaird/Default.cfg to get it working; I am happy now.

On debian and downtime
Yesterday, after 21 months of work, the debian developers released debian etch. Debian is a wonderful thing. I have played with etch 3 or 4 times since last fall, and debain stable has been on my web server for a long, long, long time. When woody passed the torch to sarge, I held off upgrading my server for about 6 months. When I finally did upgrade to sarge, I was amazed; debain upgrades are modern day miracles. With debain you really can just install the OS one time, and apt-get dist upgrade all future releases. As long as you don't go skipping releases, or going straight from stable to unstable, upgrading a debian system is a very very pleasant experience. So, when I read that etch had been deemed stable, I jumped all over it. Literally within hours (less than 4) of the upgrade announcement I was upgrading my old sparc ultra2 production web server.

There was a voice inside my head though, speaking softly to me, as I went about upgrading my trusty sarge box to debain etch. The voice was warning me to go slow, to be sure to read the release notes, to make sure i had all the bases covered, the i's dotted and the t's crossed. I mostly ignored the voice. I was aware of the pitfalls (or at least I was aware that there could be pitfalls), but another louder voice in my head said, "just do it, woody to sarge went so smoothly, what could go wrong?" I knew better, but I did it anyway.

First a little background info: this box used to be a desktop, and later became a server. It used to have a monitor and keyboard. Now it's a headless sun box in a corner of my youngest daughter's room. The reat of my computers are in other parts of the house. I do all my administration on this box via ssh. Beofre i stared the installation I did a trial run; i changed my sources.list file to call for etch repos instead of sarge and did the whole update upgrade thing-but stopping short of selecting yes and letting dpkg make the changes. I saw that a great many packages, that I have long since stopped using were going to be upgraded. So I changed my sources.list file back to sarge repos, and went about uninstalling any and everything X-windows related. As I mentioned before this box is a true headless server now, I don't need all that GUI stuff anyway.

After cleaning up the GUI packeges that I didn't need anymore, I stared the upgrade proper this time, and was pleased to see the number of files to be upgraded was significantly less than before. The upgrade itself went as I expected--perfect. Maybe too perfect. There were some tense moments though. The one foremost on my mind, was will the upgrade finish, before my wife wakes up and comes in and tells me that I have to be at work in 5 hours and need to get my butt in bed. The other thing I was concerned about was apache 1.3 vs 2. My server is still running apache 1.3 and I don't want to move to apache 2 yet. I sat there watching the text scroll by occasionally checking the time, and listening for my wife to wake up. I noticed that apache 2 was installed along side apache 1.3 and apache 2 took over web server and replaced my web page with a page that said "It works!". That was easily fixed though, by uninstalling apache 2. My box was upgraded, my site was only down 10 minutes (due to apache 2 taking over momentarily), and the wife didn't wake up and fuss at me, and I was in bed before 12:30 am. Life was good!

I woke up the next morning feeling great! My very old Ultra Sparc 2 box had new life. This is what is good about linux and debian. I got to work and ssh'd into my box and poked around some; it was then I noticed that the upgrade didn't upgrade my kernel from 2.6.8-3 to 2.6.18-4. "That won't do", the voice in my head said. What i did next was stupid. I have been using linux for 13 years, what I did was dumber than dumb. I upgraded the kernel, and removed the working kernel after I was done. I did this 40 miles from home, and then I rebooted my machine! Did I say that what i did was dumb?

What happened next was 10 hours of downtime for my website, for my blog, for my forums, and my podcast rss feeds. That, and a lot of fussing at myself. Was i really so stupid, or was it because I was feeling good (read smug) about myself and the upgrade the night before? Or was it because I was at work, and in a hurry? I have to think it was a little of all of those things. One thing i do know though, thus was my fault NOT debian's. I knew better, and did it anyway.

On the drive home, I hoped against hope that I hadn't done what I knew hat I had. I kept telling myself, maybe just maybe, you did a shutdown -h instead of a -r. When I got home my fears were realized. The sparc was running, but linux wasn't. Luckily, I did still have a 2.4 kernel on the system and was able to boot into that, and determine that the reason the box didn't boot was that the new 2.6.18-4 kernel and/or udev didn't recognize my hard drive or my cd. Uninstalling the 2.6.18-4 kernel and reinstalling the 2.6.8-3 kernel fixed the problem. The server is up and running etch. Life is good again.

I said earlier that this was my fault, not debian's. Either the new kernel or udev is buggy, at least on my hardware., but I have no one to blame but myself for rebooting a new kernel on a production machine from 40 miles away. Live and re-learn.

Car Wreck
Last Friday, March 30th 2007, at 5:30 am, I was driving to work, and was one mile into the interstate portion of my commute, doing about 70 miles per hour in my Honda Civic, when a 18 wheel truck (also driving near 70 miles per hour) drifted into my lane and his front right tire hit my car on the rear driver's side door. I immediately lost control of the Civic. I was somehow able to eventually bring the car back in control and stop on the side of the interstate.

The first thing the truck driver did was rush to my car and apologize for hitting me. He apologized at least two more times for "hitting me".

IT CROSSES NO ONE'S MIND TO APOLOGIZE FOR A WRECK, IF THEY KNOW THEY WEREN'T AT FAULT

He changed his story though after having several conversations with his boss; he told the patrolman that he never left his lane. The patrolman found us both non-contributers to the accident, as we both maintained we were in our own lanes, and there were no eye-wittnesses. I told the patrolman I was very confused by this, as the truck driver felt the need to apologize three times for "hitting me". The cop said his hands were tied at this point, it was either find us both at fault or both non-contributers.

I was NOT podcasting at the time of the accident, but did have my recorder with me. I wish very badly that I had recorded the truck drivers apologies, so I could play them back to the patrolman.

It was a miracle that I was not killed or even injured.

The podcast studio on wheels didn't fair as well though. The car is unfortunately NOT totaled and is being repaired. The body shop tells me the estimate is a little over $6000.00 to fix the car. They are going to have cut the car in half (but not the frame) and replace everything. The car is less than two years old and only has 32,000 miles on it. My choices were to file this on my collision insurance, pay the $250 deductable, watch my rates go up, and let my insurance company seek reimbursement after the car is repaired, OR fight the trucking company myself. I chose the first option.

I have been VERY sore, pulled muscles in the back and left arm and sholder, but I am feeling better now.

I will post pictures when I can.

I thank God for miracles and advil.

WRT54GL
In the very near future I am going to have to move all my computers to another part of the house. This is going to require a wireless bridge. This is also going to be the reason I am finally going to get around to installing a 3rd party firmware on a linksys router. I just ordered a linksys WRT54GL, and when it arrives I am going to install DD-WRT v23 on it. I was not looking forward to the computer room move, but now I am. I am already thinking about replacing my current router, (a crippled WRT54G v 5.0) which will become my primary router with the new WRT54GL acting as the client bridge, with a WRT54GL as well. I will hold off on that until I get the computers moved upstairs and the wireless bridge up and running. The good thing about linksys router replacements, is they all look the same to the wife. New toys are invisable if they look identical to the old ones. Maybe I shouldn't have said that:-) It's not like she doesn't know though, I spent 10 minutes telling her what I was going to do, and she didn't understand a word of ti.

Underground the podcast coming soon I hope.
Underground: Tales of hacking, madness and obsession on the electronic frontier is a book written by Suelette Dreyfus with research by Julian Assange. You can find out more at Undergound the book web site.

I have converted the text of this book into audio (mp3 and ogg) using festival and audacity. I have made several attempts to contact the authors of this book, to make sure I had permission to make an audio book of their work available as a podcast. Just this morning I got a reply, and they said "Please do!"

I hope to make these available for download in the near future.

One of the things I have to work out is how I am gonna do this on my libsyn account without going over my monthly upload quota. I will probably just have to be careful and schedule the post. More later...

Photos from the Dominican Republic
I took these pics on the beach today. It's around 87 degrees F here today, but feels cooler on the beach. By the pool though, it's VERY hot. If you love the beach as much as I do, Punta Cana, Domincan Republic is hard to beat. This place is really really nice. It's by far, the nicest beach that I have ever been too. DR vacation 1 DR vacation 2 DR vacation 3 I decided on which graphic novel to take to read while down here: Crisis on Infinite Earths. This is probably not technically a graphic novel, as it is just the 12 monthly issues, orginally published in 1985, compiled in book form. I enjoyed reading it very much. The wait staff and employees here only make about 150 US dollars a month. One of the waiters here became quite excited when he say me reading a a 300 plus page comic book. He stopped and offered to buy it from me. That, I am told, is VERY unusual; normally the people here are trying to sell you stuff at inflated prices, and you have to go back and forth with them on the price to keep from getting ripped off. I had never had a local offer to buy something from me. The last thing i thought might end up in the hands of a local here was my new comic book. I don't think I could have slept good if I ended up selling him the book; so today I gave it to him. He was very happy about that. It was fun to watch. I hope it doesn't get fired for reading it on the job.

DR vacation 4 DR vacation 5 DR vacation 6 It's also been sorta fun using my linux laptop down here in the sports bar too. Everytime I come in here I get to give a linux demonstration. No really, I do linux demonstrations. Noting organized or planned of course, but curious window and mac users haven't been the least bit shy about coming up and asking what kind of computer I am running. It's been funny really; I sit down here and try to get something done, when somebody will walk up and say excuse me what is that you are running. I have shown beryl to at least 2 different curious windows users, and one mac user. They were VERY impressed! To quote one one of the windows users after seeing beryl,"you have just blown my mind". I even had one conversation with a windows user that lasted almost 2 hours; he had LOTS of questions. I was more than happy to talk about linux though. Most of the tourist here are from Europe. I guess I was thinking more Europeans knew about linux, but to the ones here at least, linux was very new to them.

It's been a great vacation, and it's not half over yet

SSH saves the day
While here in the Dominican Republic, using the free wifi, I tried to connect to irc.freenode.net. I kept getting kicked off though--something about the network running an open proxy. No biggie for linux and ssh. I simply ssh'd into my home machine and ran irssi from there. All good now. I could have done the same thing with a ssh port tunnel, but running screen over my ssh session was nice, as I was able to do many things at once.

I hope to post some vacation photos tomorrow.

Greetings from the Dominican Republic
I just found out that the resort I am staying at has free wifi; it's a good thing I brought my laptop. Without the laptop, the resort would have charged me $4/20 minutes for internet access! Speaking of getting ripped off... I left my cell phone on the plane. When I got to the resort, I had the front desk call the airport. Long story short, $66 dollars in taxi fares later, I had my cell phone back. Someone had made 8 calls on it too! Anyway, that's behind me now; It's 86 degrees F and beautiful. I will be the tannest geek on earth by weeks end. I will try to post some pictures. I better get get off the computer now though, before the wife starts complaining.

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8)

It works with Beryl (albeit using XGL) and I am experiencing noticable frame rate increases too (yes I know glxgears isn't a benchmarking tool).

glxgears
11199 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2239.679 FPS
17053 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3410.522 FPS
17057 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3411.321 FPS
15395 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3078.930 FPS
11926 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2385.025 FPS

I installed it using this file, made executable and run as root.

#!/bin/bash
apt-get update
apt-get install module-assistant build-essential wget
apt-get install fakeroot dh-make debconf libstdc++5 linux-headers-$(uname -r)
wget -c https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ \
ati-driver-installer-8.34.8-x86.x86_64.run
chmod +x ati-driver-installer-8.34.8-x86.x86_64.run
./ati-driver-installer-8.34.8-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/edgy
dpkg -i xorg-driver-fglrx_8.34.8-1_i386.deb fglrx-kernel-source_8.34.8-1_i386.deb fglrx-control_8.34.8-1_i386.deb
rm /usr/src/fglrx-kernel*.deb
module-assistant prepare
module-assistant update
module-assistant build fglrx
module-assistant install fglrx
depmod -a
aticonfig --initial
aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv

The forum is up and running
I have mixed feelings about this. In spite of not knowing if I have an audience that will support yet another forum, in spite of not knowing if I have the time to run a forum, and in spite of not knowing anything about forums, I went ahead and did it anyway. The lottalinuxlinks.com forum has been activated. No one requested this; this is really just something I thought would be fun to get up and running. If this forum falls flat on it's face, is wildly successful, or just basques in the same glow of mediocrity that my podcast enjoys, I can know I was right about one thing: it was a great deal of fun setting it up. Now that the up and running part is done, time will tell if it was a good idea.

Regardless of what I think this forum's real chances of success are, I would really like to see this forum thrive. If this thing takes off in any shape, form, or fashion, I may need to look at getting some moderators. That's probably premature speculation at this point though.

Being the spam hater I am, I have set the user activation setting to require admin approval. This means that to become a registered user, you will have to register, wait for an email from me, reply to my email, and then wait for me to activate your account. This may reduce the forum's chances for growth, but again, time will tell.

So, for what it's worth...have at it.

Today on the way home from work I recorded podcast #29 -- or at least I thought I was recording it. Turns out, I had the batteries in backwards :-(. Anyway, after I recovered from my misfortune, I re-recorded the podcast from my house. I think I have cometo rely on the ambient road noises in the podcast as a crutch of sorts though. Without the road noise, the recording is really TOO good, meaning he normal mouth sounds, swallows, and smacks, are more audible. This is unfortunate for the listener, but if you can suffer through my normal car/podcasts, then a little more mouth sounds want kill you, and remember, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Besides, if it gets too disgusting for you, you can always turn it off:-). I debated re-recording from the car, but that would have had to wait till Monday. I won't (fingers crossed) make this mistake again. So, suffer through this one if you can, and I will resume the normal carcast starting with podcast 30.
