The SCO Subpoena of FSF
Bradley M. Kuhn,Tuesday 18 May 2004, FSF: Late last year, we were subpoenaed by SCO as part of the ongoing dispute between SCO and IBM. Today, we made that subpoena available on our website. This is a broad subpoena that effectively asks for every single document about the GPL and enforcement of the GPL since 1999. They also demand every document and email that we have exchanged with Linus Torvalds, IBM, and other players in the community. In many cases, they are asking for information that is confidential communication between us and our lawyers, or between us and our contributors....Read More

Check the staus of your distros mirrors
This is pretty neat and useful. If you are tired of slow apt-get, yum, or up2date performance, then check out this page to see where the fast mirros are: Mirror Watch

For the brave of heart (or just lazy)
Upgrading from FC1 to FC2 using yum - a few suggestions: There are certain things only anaconda can do. There is no other way around it. If you're using LVM stop reading and know that you must use anaconda to do this upgrade. In general, if you're not cramped for space/time/something you should use anaconda to upgrade. You'll find you come out with a much more reliable upgrade process and much less pain. However, if you'd like to try to upgrade the whole system via yum you should follow these instructions...Read More

FC2 Screenshot
fedora core 2 screenshot Here is a screenshot of my fedora core 2 desktop. This is completely uncustomized. Normally I run a dual head configuration; but I am waiting on the nvidia driver. I will post more when I get around to making it look more like my fc1 desktop (big file).

Remote backup using ssh, tar and cron
MadPenguin.org has an article/tutorial on remote backups: Are you looking for a solution to backup your data to a remote location? While a solid backup solution such as Arkeia or TSM from IBM are nice from an enterprise point of view, simpler solutions are available from a home user's perspective. I will walk you through on you how you can backup your data to a remote server, using the default tools available on all linux systems. In a nutshell, we will use ssh capabilities to allow a cron job to transfer a tarball from you local machine to a remote machine....Read MOre

I hate waiting
I am impatient. I got my nice shiny new install of fedora core 2 up and running; and now I have to wait. Waiting for the repositories to be populated with the latest binaries for FC2.s hard to do. Sometimes I wish fedora came pre-loaded with all the questionable stuff they choose to leave out; but it is easily obtainabale *for those who can wait 12 to 72 hours. I know I could compile from souce, but I only want to do that for stuff I can't find with apt or yum for FC2. It makes it easier to manage packages way. I hate waiting, especially for the NVidia drivers. I got a lot to do though. So I guess I should make use of the time in waiting.

A REAL Java Desktop?
The JD4X was developed with the intention of providing a Java environment that allows Java programmers to build and extend a windowing system purely in Java. However, the project itself is not pure Java and uses a mixture of Java and C. D4X is targeted at the hobbyist programmers who desire to put their skills to the test by customizing a desktop of their own. To do this, the JD4X project sets out to provide a native structural foundation that gives them a greater degree of control over their desktop, JVMs and Java classes that runs on the Linux X Window system, thereby giving the Java programmer full control of their desktop environment. The project also targets Java users who may desire a Java enabled and component based desktop without excluding other native applications already found on their Linux distribution. It does this by also providing a ....Read More

Utah sees first spyware case
The Register reports: Overstock.com is set to become the first company to take action under Utah's new anti-spyware law. The company has filed a complaint against online retailer SmartBargains in the third district court in Salt Lake City. Utah's spyware law, the world's first, only made the statute book on 3 May. Utah is the only state with current spyware legislation, although California and Iowa are considering their own versions of the law....Read More

Flaws drill holes in open-source databases
ZDNet.com reports: Flaws in two popular source code database applications could allow attackers to access and corrupt open-source software projects, a security researcher said Wednesday. One vulnerability affects the Concurrent Versions System (CVS), an application used by many developers to store program code. The other flaw affects a newer, less widely used system known as Subversion, said Stefan Esser, the researcher who discovered the security holes....Read More
