Mac OS X
Mac OS X is leaving my power mac, this time for good. Both of the last two releases 10.3.6 and 10.3.7 have toasted my install. I am putting debian on there again. his time I will not be lured back to OS X no matter what! Now I will be able to use that box without the reboots and reintalls.

x86_64 / amd64 / i386 (fedora or debian)
I am running fedora core 3 x86_64 because it works, and it supports x86_64. I miss debian though. Debian's amd64 port is not what I am looking for though. I really like the bi-arch support the way it is implemented by fedora. I miss debian enough though, that I may go back to sid for i386.

testing gnome-blosxom
Choice is good; it can be frustrating, having to choose--but it's good. I love debian, but I am having to use fedora on my main machine. My other 4 linux computers ar all debian; but my main computer (amd64) is fedora. I tried the debian pure64 distro first, but after trying fedora (bi-arch) x86_64. I am sticking with fedora for ease of use/maintainability. I will switch back to debian if/when the implement a bi-arch x86_64 distro. I know all about chrooting, I'd rather not have to, that's all.

How to play DVDs on any x86 GNU/Linux distro
From Linux.com:My folks recently bought and sent me two DVDs, but the only DVD player I have is in my Linux-based computer. Using the free software application MPlayer, I was able to watch my videos. I'll walk you through the easy steps required.

I used Slackware GNU/Linux v10.0 on an AMD Athlon, but the techniques apply to any distro on x86 hardware and even to BSD-based operating systems. I'll assume here that you are a user of GNU/Linux, that you're running the X Window System with some window manager (it doesn't matter which), that you know how to get to a command prompt and do basic directory navigation and file manipulation, and that you know what a symbolic link is....Read More

I'm back
I just got back from a week's "vacation" in Panama City Beach, Florida. Is it still called a vacation when you have been unemployed for 10 months? It didn't really feel like a vacation. The 32 oz T-bone steak I had tasted the same as it normally does. I still had fun doing the same old stuff I normally do on vacation. Still, it didn't really "feel" like a vacation. In one regard it did though: I have a contract job now. I start next week. I am very excited.

Automate backups on Linux
No excuses: do-it-yourself, secure, distributed network backups made easy

The loss of critical data can prove devastating. Still, millions of professionals ignore backing up their data. While individual reasons vary, one of the most common explanations is that performing routine backups can be a real chore. Because machines excel at mundane and repetitive tasks, the key to reducing the inherent drudgery and the natural human tendency for procrastination, is to automate the backup process....Read More at IBM

Microsoft Faces Angry IE Users' Questions
In a lively online discussion Thursday, Microsoft engineers faced off with end users who lobbed irate questions, comments and a few tirades about its Internet Explorer browser.

Take Two and Call Me in the Morning or One Bob's Search for Reliable Internet Service in a Colonial City
From i, cringely: During my five years in the California Wine Country, I struggled to overcome the limitations of rural Internet service. Dial-up was a joke since I never saw more than 26.4 kilobits-per-second. DSL was at first a bad dream since I was 36,000 feet from the telephone company central office. Cable Internet service was possible, but only if I paid the $22,000 it would cost to install the cable (no thanks). Satellite came and went. A long distance WiFi connection served me well for a couple years. Then one day, for no apparent business reason, SBC dropped an optical cable at the end of my driveway, and suddenly, I had a six megabit-per-second DSL pipe. Alas, by then we were already planning our move to South Carolina, where I hoped living in an urban environment would make simple getting a good Internet connection. Nope. Finding good broadband service here in Charleston was just as hard or harder than it was back in Santa Rosa. But now I'm finally satisfied and want to explain what I had to do to make it work....Read More

Patched in 60 Seconds
Today it was announced that a vulnerability in the Mozilla and Firefox Web browsers allows the execution of arbitrary code in Windows NT, 2000, and XP systems. It doesn't affect GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris or anything else -- just Windows. I'd imagine that Microsoft's head honchos will be mentioning this exploit whenever they want to attack open source software security for years to come. Ironically OSS advocates might use the same story to attack Microsoft's security record. Why? Because a patch was released before the vulnerability was widely reported....Read More at NewsForge

What I am meant to be doing
Today, the opportunity to be doing what I am meant to do was presented to me; doing what I love, what I am meant to do, created to do, and a real chance to be doing it for the only reason that matters. As a Christian, I am to do everything unto God and for His glory. If this works out, and in praying for God's will in my life, I hope that it does, I will be given a gift that few ever realize: to be allowed to do what I love while reaching others for Christ Jesus.

If you are reading this and are the least bit intrigued, then please find a copy of Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life and find out for yourself what you are meant to be doing.

Internet Explorer Is Too Dangerous to Keep Using
Because Internet Explorer, like Outlook, has finally become, to my mind, a permanent security hole that masquerades as a useful application.

Strong words? Have you really thought about this latest exploit? It could hit every Internet Explorer (IE) browser that merely visited any page served by an infected Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Server).

No anti-virus program would stop it, no firewall would slow it down and no shipping IE security patch would even notice it. Visit the page, get the infection. It was that simple....Read More at EWeek

From Linux Gazette:The thing about backups is that they can just be a pain. Everyone knows just how important they are, but very few people actually take the time to perform proper backups. Even after they have felt the pain of losing all those important files.

In this article I am going to show you how to quickly set up your computer for simple, hassle-free, and transparent backups using only rsync and cron (or Anacron). Reduce compile time with distcc (A fast, free distributed method for C/C++ compilation)
Some people prefer the convenience of pre-compiled binaries in the form of RPMs or other such installer methods. Linux users are spoiled
A friend got a new laptop with Windows XP pre-installed. "Does this come with an IRC program?" he asked. No, it doesn't. There are plenty of IRC programs for Windows, but you need to download and install them yourself. Word processing? Not included. Spreadsheet? Windows leaves you on your own yet again. I swear, by the time you buy or download all the software it takes to actually do something with Windows, you might as well install Linux. It would take a lot less time. I don't know about you, but my time is worth money, and if I need to do a whole bunch of software downloading and installation to make my computer usable, we're talking huge TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).

Because of antitrust concerns, Microsoft needs to be careful about what kind of application software it ships with Windows. Microsoft reps sometimes point to Linux distributions and ask why they can get away with shipping stacks and stacks of applications without getting in trouble. The answer to that one, of course, is that the Linux distributions give you a choice. You aren't locked into one particular application. Most Linux distributions include several choices for most program classifications; even single-CD distros usually include several Web browsers and email clients....Read More at NewsForge

About the Finder...
From arstechnica: It's no secret that I don't like the Mac OS X Finder. Almost every article I've written about Mac OS X has included a litany of criticisms, from small annoyances to fundamental philosophical differences. Some readers agree with my criticisms, and some disagree, and some aren't sure exactly what the problem is. There was even a forum thread on the topic recently. Debian just rocks
I couldn't be happier with my move from fedora core 2 to debian. There will be no looking back this time. In the past I have occasionally suffered from distro envy. That and unhealthy love for linux are the reasons that I have tried just about every distro under the sun--even the obscure ones.I always came back to redhat though. I seriously don't see myself doing that again though. I may move down to debian testing one day, if unstable proves to problematic--but we will see.

Antipiracy bill targets technology
rthcoming bill in the U.S. Senate would, if passed, dramatically reshape copyright law by prohibiting file-trading networks and some consumer electronics devices on the grounds that they could be used for unlawful purposes.

The proposal, called the Induce Act, says "whoever intentionally induces any violation" of copyright law would be legally liable for those violations, a prohibition that would effectively ban file-swapping networks like Kazaa and Morpheus. In the draft bill seen by CNET News.com, inducement is defined as "aids, abets, induces, counsels, or procures" and can be punished with civil fines and, in some circumstances, lengthy prison terms....Read more at C|net news.com

Debian: where it's at
I am sooo glad I ditched fedora for debian sid. My box is in the state it should have been a month ago when I moved from fedora core 1 to fedora core 2. Installed it last night in less than an hour (even used the beta installer--wouldn't you know though that the first releas cnandate installer came out today) and customized to my taste today while at the same time waching after my two daughters, adding packages for dvd and digital cam, nvidia twinview and openGL, kernel upgrade, games, etc, etc. One word: COOLNESS. I know, it's suppossed to be as cutting edge as fc2; right now though everything just works! I'm am not all that "up" on the debian development cycle; but it seems to me to be less sloppy or at least less enterprise driven (for sure) and more community centric than fedora. Me likes! I am very happy.

But now, it's been almost one month, and I still can't run openGL stuff. And on top of that the new kernel upgrade (the one from yesterday--not today's) somehow broke my up till now, perfectly running soundcard. I know that sid is liable to break stuff on occasion too. But I really think it's time to ditch fedora. I may change mt mind before morning. Thinking.......

A splintering Linux community
We now have two distinct classes of Linux users whose interests are not the same, and perhaps we have more than that if we want to talk about people who think of software in political rather than pragmatic terms. Novell Wins Remand Contest- Case Stays in Federal Court - It's Copyright Proof Time
Judge Kimball, as he promised, has issued his order* on the Novell case. The big news is that SCO lost its fight to get the case sent back to state court. SCO's entire theory of the case as a contract issue only went out the window, and they are now squarely in a pure copyright fight, which is the last thing they wanted. They will now have to prove that they own the copyright they are using to threaten end users like AutoZone. Kimball agrees with Novell that there are serious questions about whether the agreement even as amended by Amendment 2 is sufficient to be a copyright conveyance, and that means it stays in federal court. He retains jurisdiction. Remember all the experts who told us SCO might win this? They were mistaken....Read More at groklaw

SCO Loses Motion to Bifurcate - SCO Motion to Delay Partly Denied, Partly Granted
There is no moss growing on the Honorable Dale Kimball. Now comes word that SCO's Motion to Bifurcate the patent claims has also been denied without prejudice to renew after all dispositive motions have been decided. That is what IBM said made sense to do, wait until it is clear what is actually going to trial. Personally, I am guessing that would be nothing. Top 500 Supercomputers Increasingly Turning to Linux and Open Source
In summary, 3 of the top 5 use an open source OS, 5 of the top 10, and 7 of the top 20. Almost all open source OS used are Linux, with the brief exception of 1 Mac OS X. It's interesting how IBM and HP, for all their promotion of open source, prefer to sell their proprietary operating systems with the high-end hardware. Will that change? Linux In 2004 - Usability Needs A Facelift
During the majority of my time working with computers, Windows was the operating system of choice. Reason being, it's all I've known. In 2002, I took a college course titled "Linux Administration" which entitled me to a few cd-roms of Redhat 7.x. While this course was nothing more than a few extra credits for me, I fell in love with Linux and went through the entire textbook a week into the class. It was a nice feeling to use something "different" than what I was used to.

Microsoft's Sacred Cash Cow
A former Microsoftie says addiction to Windows revenue, mediocre products, and missed opportunities could doom Seattle's most successful company.

Why are Microsoft products so endlessly frustrating to use? Even techno-geeks like me get annoyed by Windows. I'm tired of spending the first 10 minutes of my day rebooting just so I can get to work. Microsoft Outlook 2003, the latest version of the company's e-mail and calendar software, hangs for me about once a day, requiring me to restart my PC. I also have a problem with Word 2003: Whenever I bullet a line of text, every line in the document gets a bullet. Making An Operating System Faster
(10 Things Apple Did To Make Mac OS X Faster)

The performance of computer hardware typically increases monotonically with time. Even if the same could be said of software, the rate at which software performance improves is usually very slow compared to that of hardware. In fact, many might opine that there is plenty of software whose performance has deteriorated consistently with time. Moreover, it is rather difficult to establish an objective performance metric for software as complex as an operating system: a "faster OS" is a very subjective, context dependent phrase....Read More at kernelthread.com

I saw "Apaptation" night before last
"Adaptation" may not be one of the top 10 movies I have ever seen. It is a good movie though; and may be Nicolas Cage's best movie yet. It also stars Meryl Streep and Best Supporting Actor Winner Chris Cooper. The movie was written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze. Cage plays screenwriter Chralie Kaufman and his twin bother Donald Kaufman. Soon after completing his work on "Being John Malkovich" Charlie (Cage) is hired to write the screenplay for a movie based on a best selling book written by Streep about an obsessive orchid hunter (Cooper). As Charlie is having trouble writing the screenplay, he ends up writing himself and his twin brother into the movie. Talk about life imatating art. Kaufman writes a movie about himself writing himself into a movie. Not as confusing as "Memento", but as orginal. This is a fun movie. Also reminds me of "American Splendour" in some ways. If you like original comedy, and drama mixed then you will probably enjoy this movie.

On being unemployed
I have been unemployed now for 8 monthes. There are things that are nice about being unemployed; being home with my daughters, working on my computer, going to bed late, and....well that might be about all that's nice about it actually. For the most part it is not fun at all. I have been through a variety of emotions (most of them succesfully supressed, as I so often do) since being layed off. The most recent emotion (anger) I started experienceing about 48 hours ago; and I was entirely unsuccessful in supressing it. I am still mad now, if I think about it. I am tired of being unemployed. I am tired of hearing about my unemployment too. I am tired of thinking about it. I am suprised actually that it has taken me this long to become angry. Knowing my personality though, this was inevitable. I usually hold things in till I explode; then I get over it. I think this has just happened to me. It's probably a good thing. Now I can get over it, and get on with my unemployment and hopefully end this chapter of my life in relative short order.
